Johnson County Public Health Department: The public health department offers HIV testing, WIC, environmental health resources, and community education.

Shelter House: Iowa City’s only general homeless shelter with 70 beds and breakfast and dinner provided. People can stay for up to 30 days in the emergency shelter or up to 90 days in the transitional shelter program with active case management services to help them achieve stable housing and employment. There are special programs for veterans and families, job training, and a nursing clinic at their site.

Emma Goldman Clinic: Women’s clinic with services that include gynecology, birth control, abortions, STI treatment, teen clinics, massage therapy, men’s services and trans health initiatives. They provide free pregnancy testing and options counseling, referrals, blood pressure checks and birth control/STI consultations on a walk-in basis.

Proteus: A service that provides job training, health care, and financial assistance for underserved people in Iowa primarily focused on migrant workers. Mobile Clinic partners with Proteus for specific summer migrant worker clinics, but also they engage in a variety of other services.

Trinity Muscatine Public Health: Muscatine County’s public health work is contracted through Trinity Muscatime, who provides services including immunizations, communicable disease treatment and follow-up, screening for lead poisoning, well-child examinations, prenatal education, and linkages with community resources. Most educational programs are not free.

 Community Health Centers of Southeastern Iowa, Inc: Offers health care primarily to serve indigent, medically underserved and underinsured populations and gives assistance to special populations. Has primary care services, immunizations, dental care, prenatal care, and pediatric care. Accepts Medicaid and private insurance and offers sliding scale fee discount for uninsured/underinsured, but patients must provide documentation.

Hawk-i is free or low-cost health care coverage for Iowa children (up to 19 years of age).


Women’s Health Iowa – Child and Adolescent Health addresses health and social concerns regarding kids of all ages.

The Iowa City Free Medical Clinic offers school and work physicals, eye exams, dental care, diabetes screening and treatment, and referral to other health care services, among many other health care services.
